At Whole Log Reclaimed, we’ve evolved the way wood box beams are made. While our roots are planted deep in traditional reclaimed lumber, we discovered that creating a flawless box beam requires a smarter, modern approach.
Today, our beams are crafted using precision-cut newly sawn veneers. By precision-milling our wood, we create an evenly balanced surface that guarantees an incredibly strong, efficient bond during the lamination process. This engineering breakthrough allows us to offer custom ultra-wide and extra-long beams at an affordable luxury price point.
Our timber is responsibly sourced by reclaiming dead-standing trees straight from the forest. Because we salvage incredibly large, mature trees, this material is truly "old wood" boasting dense growth rings and unmatched stability.
Furthermore, we know what you love about vintage timber. Even though our veneers are newly sawn for structural performance, the wood still contains beautiful character marks—including random deep splits, checks, and cracks—that buyers appreciate in premium reclaimed wood.

1. Hand Hewn: The Refined Rustic
- The Look: Rugged and deeply contoured, yet perfectly tailored.
- The Craft: Unlike wild, unpredictable historic beams, these are newly hewn by modern craftsmen. You get all the bold, artistic axe marks of a traditional rustic beam, beautifully intermingled with the natural splits and cracks inherent to our large-scale old wood. It offers a look that is deeply rustic yet sophisticated.
2. Circle Sawn: Vintage Soul, Modern Precision
- The Look: Tactile, geometric, and rich with industrial character.
- The Craft: The beautiful, arching "circular" patterns of yesteryear's timber mills are recreated on our old-wood veneers using specialized modern machinery. This process perfectly mimics the sweeping lines of historic saws while highlighting the organic character marks and weathering of the timber beneath.
3. Band Sawn: The Soft Accent
- The Look: Subtle, uniform, and cleanly textured.
- The Craft: Replicated using state-of-the-art equipment, this texture features straight, clean lines running perpendicular to the grain. It offers a gentle, tactile warmth that beautifully balances out the rugged nature of the wood's natural splits and character lines, giving your room depth without overpowering your design.
4. Classic Smooth Surface: The Refined Canvas
- The Look: Sleek, sophisticated, and architectural.
- The Craft: These newly planed veneers are sanded flat to show off their sleek wood faces along with naturally occurring distress marks, cracks & splits found in our forest-salvaged old wood. With this texture, we carefully work to strike a balance between classic clean grain areas and character marks. While some lengths or sides naturally showcase an imperfection-free "clean grade"—a look that is often highly welcomed in species like White Oak—other sections will subtly display expected splits, checks, or cracks. Rather than being overwhelmingly rustic or flawlessly sterile, it offers a perfectly curated blend of smooth refinement and organic history.
